There have always been Batwing Pegasi and Curvehorn Unicorns in the Night Guard, but since Princess Luna has returned to Equestria, she has begun accepting volunteers from among the ranks to be transformed into the dark-adapted subraces to better perform their duties. Sky Scorpion Red was one of these volunteers, promoted to Junior Flight Officer in  Luna's personal escort squadron for her ferocity in combat during the Changeling Invasion; she tries not to let on that she was an emotional wreck afterward, and worries occasionally that she's been promoted above her abilities.

All Royal Guard armor is also a uniform, which is enchanted to make all the members of a given unit look roughly the same to those who aren't also wearing the same armor; her neckpiece here is the equivalent of Night Guard fatigues, worn when off duty so that she can still recognize those in full armor.
